Meet Dr. Claudia

After graduating from the University of Florida in 1975, I started teaching. I taught primary grades at a Montessori School because, at that time, public schools were allowed to reject kids with disabilities. They came to me. I learned a lot from them. Special education became law a few months later. The schools were required to educate them. A Master’s degree in Guidance and Counseling, made me hope I could help kids get what they needed. Nope, the culture was too rigid. Same stuff, different day. Teaching in a Philadelphia housing project public school, I learned about special education and school psychology. I was hooked. I saw my life’s path.
I enrolled in the School Psychology program at Temple University. I earned a Master’s Degree and the Ph.D. I began working in schools again. Same stuff, different decade. Frustrated with the bureaucracy, I quit. I opened an assessment practice, and it exploded. I offered testing, advocacy, parenting, and community education services. The forensic work started when adoptees from Russian orphanages arrived in our community, and they came to me. I testified in all manner of criminal and civil trials. I became a clinical psychologist because I wanted to know more. For 25 years, I had a 6-month waiting list. The radio show was born and was thriving until the pandemic. I returned to the public schools. Same stuff, different decade. No can do. On to Sock Puppet Shrink where I can share what I know with you. It’s been quite the ride, but we’ve arrived…

Why Sock Puppet Shrink?

There’s so much information online.
There’s so much information online.
I’ve overwhelmed and these sites are so clinical looking. I’m anxious enough as it is!
What can I trust?
What can I trust?
Who can I trust? What sites can I trust? Are they experts? How can I tell if what they say is accurate?

Give me what I need. I want to be informed, inspired and entertained Make it meaningful for me so I can use it!
I’m way too busy
I’m way too busy
I want options to read, listen, and see what you’re talking about. I need brief bites and I need it now…
As I move through the online world, there are some really great ideas for “how to get life done” offered by everyday folks. I use them. I recommend them to my patients, but when it’s important for people to understand the “why” behind the “what”, that’s when I want an expert. When I want a really great recipe that I can trust, Ina Garten is my go-to. She explains it all. When a quick semi-homemade dish is needed, there are lots of other great resources. I use them all. Most of the time, the recipes are ones that “qualify for a recipe card”. If they make it through a few seasons, then they qualify to be laminated. It’s all about who I can trust, and which sites give me what I need when I need it. Consistency, reliability, predictability and quality…those are my driving needs when it’s time to cook or bake.
That’s where Sock Puppet Shrink comes in. And, yes, I will be offering short articles called “Recipes for Resolution” and other fun titles, but don’t pre-heat the oven just yet. Sock Puppet Shrink has a variety of ways to reach you and teach you. You only need to explore. Education, training, experience, and connection create that relationship where expertise is evident, and trust is felt. You’re assured that when you stop in, you’ll leave with a handful of ideas and strategies, as well as the understanding of “why” to use them. It’s your choice to determine the “what” to use, and when and how to tailor strategies to fit the unique needs of your life. Laugh a little, learn a lot at Sock Puppet Shrink.
